In-house counsels recommend DSC Legal again as the “LEADING LAW FIRM” in the real estate industry
For the second time in a row, in-house counsels employed in the real estate industry have recommended DSC Legal as the “leading law firm” within that line of business (1st place in the national overall ranking). Our firm also belongs to the top-ranking law firms (national and regional) when it comes to its main practice areas shaping the real estate law.
At the end of 2017, the most-recent results of the survey for the annual study “kanzleimonitor.de“ were published. The survey was conducted by the Federal German Association of In-house Counsels (Bundesverband der Unternehmensjuristen, the “BUJ”). For the current edition of the study (2017/2018), 9,820 recommendations by in-house counsels/lawyers from 930 companies were taken into account. 260 recommendations were made by in-house counsels/lawyers employed in the real estate industry.
1. Real estate sector ranking – DSC Legal again No. 1 in Germany
DSC Legal maintains its top ranking (1st place) in the national overall ranking for the real estate sector (“Immobilienwirtschaft”), once again leaving behind all other law firms (just like the year before).
2. DSC Legal also among the top ranking law firms in its main practice areas
DSC Legal also managed to consistently take the top ranks in its core practice areas and to be named “hidden champion” again.
Finance – DSC Legal tops the list of “hidden champions”
DSC Legal has taken the lead in the list of “hidden champions” in the field of finance law (topics: structured finance, loan securities, real estate finance, project finance and acquisition finance). Our law firm is also ranked 3rd in Eastern Germany (incl. Berlin) in the regional ranking for this area of law.
Real estate and construction law – DSC Legal remains in the circle of “hidden champions”
DSC Legal remains among the “hidden champions” in the area of real estate and construction law (topics: property and construction law, construction contract procedures, tenancy law and project development).
DSC Legal managing partner Dr Peter Diedrich was repeatedly recommended as lawyer within that field of law.
Corporate law – DSC Legal once again among “hidden champions”
DSC Legal has been named again “hidden champion” in the field of corporate law (topics: partnerships and corporations: foundation, mergers, division into several enterprises, capital measures), due not least to our strong notarial practice.
Mergers & Acquisitions – DSC Legal named “hidden champion”
Our firm was also repeatedly recommended within the very important practice area of mergers & acquisitions (topics: company purchase, merger, bidding procedures, due diligence and post-merger integration). DSC Legal has been named “hidden champion” within that field of law, too.
DSC Legal partner Dr Istvan Szabados was repeatedly recommended as M & A lawyer.
3. Overall rankings beyond legal fields – DSC Legal maintains leading position among top law firms
DSC Legal is a Berlin-based boutique law firm specialized in real estate commercial law. Especially worth mentioning is therefore that we have been able to maintain our top positions in the overall rankings beyond the individual fields of law (regional, supra-regional and national) while competing with numerous other law firms who offer legal services from multiple locations.
In-house counsels in its hometown Berlin voted DSC Legal into 6th place in the overall ranking of all law firms in Berlin. In Eastern Germany (incl. Berlin) our law firm is ranked 13th. On a national level, DSC Legal remains one of the top 100 law firms in Germany.
We thank you very much for the numerous recommendations and look forward to continuing the successful cooperation at our new location Pariser Platz 3, 10117 Berlin (from 22 March 2018).

DSC Legal hosts International Real Estate Investment Virtual Round Table with IR Global
Financing and structuring cross-border real estate transactions
As Global Chair of the Real Estate Practice Group of IR Global, the world's largest professional services network, Dr. Peter Diedrich was delighted to host a round table on international real estate investment. The discussion, as part of IR Global's Virtual Round Table series, centered on financing and structuring cross-border real estate transactions, involving IR Global members from Germany, Belgium, California, New York, and Canada. The full report can be downloaded below, from the introduction:
"Real estate is big business globally as buyers increasingly look beyond their own borders for lucrative investments. Research by property broker Tranio suggests that USD 426.8 billion was invested in cross-border real estate transactions in 2016, with commercial property attracting deals worth USD188.4 billion, while USD238.4 billion was spent on overseas residential property. The US saw the largest volume of cross-border real estate deals with foreign nationals spending USD149 billion.
While these types of international deals are becoming commonplace, there is still much to consider for investors targeting foreign property. They must understand how real estate finance works in their jurisdiction of choice, including regulations, availability of capital and accepted structures. They must also be willing to carry out extensive due diligence before risking their capital, taking time to understand all the peculiarities of a jurisdiction that might impact investment decisions. Once a foreign buyer is ready to invest they should also consider the tax implications of owning assets and generating income in a foreign country, structuring their investment vehicles in the most efficient fashion.
Having an expert on the ground with intimate knowledge of the investment location is essential to a smooth purchase process. With this in mind IR Global brought together six members of its Real Estate Group to discuss cross-border real estate transactions. The aim of the feature is to give members and their clients valuable insight into the real estate transaction process across a range of jurisdictions, including best practice approaches and advice.
The following discussion involves IR Global members from Germany, the USA - California and New York, Canada and Belgium."
